“CMA CGM Launches Instant Quotes  & Booking On Freightos For China-US Lanes”On Wednesday, December 5th CMA CGM announced it had signed an agreement with Freightos to become the first shipping lines to provide instant quotes and accept online bookings in a pilot for China-US lanes. CMA CGM will become the first shipping line to be listed on Freightos. The agreement provides for online bookings, guaranteed pricing and secured capacity on CMA CGM China-US trade lanes that are available on the Freightos platform with a future addition of further lanes in the near future.

Besides CMA CGM only Hapag Lloyd and Maersk are able to provide an instant quote via its website to customers, making three out of the major six carriers to have this ability. Hapag Lloyd provides via its online platform for all of its lanes instantaneously. Maersk’s service enables confirmation of whether there is available space on the vessel or equipment to complete a booking request. Previously, customers needed to wait for a confirmation email or follow-up call after using the booking tool. In the past, 10% of Maersk’s booking requests were either rejected or confirmed for an alternate sailing date due to a lack of vessel space or equipment availability. These 10% of booking requests resulted in the customer service team spending 15% of its calls, chats and emails per month rescheduling these failed bookings.

Zvi Schreiber, Freightos CEO, told Lloyd’s Loading List that the service is expected to roll out other trade lanes including CMA CGM’s Europe to Asia routes in 2019. Further he added that shippers can make their instant bookings based on the results without pricing add-ons such as General Rate Increases (GRIs).

“Amazon launches machine learning chip, taking on Nvidia, Intel”

On Wednesday, Amazon launched a chip aimed at machine learning, a market where Intel and NVIDIA have both placed bets on where they will generate future revenue growth. AWS is one of the largest buyers of chips from both Intel and NVIDIA, but recently Amazon has started to design its own custom chips.

Wednesday saw the announcement of Amazon’s “Inferentia” chip that is designed to help with what researchers call inference – the process of taking an AI algorithm and putting it to use. An example would be taking an incoming audio sample and converting that into text based requests for relevant departments. The Inferentia chip is not a direct threat to either Intel or NVIDIA, as it is not available for sell. Amazon will be selling services to customers that will utilize these chips starting in 2019. However, if Amazon starts to rely upon its own chips, both NVIDIA and Intel will lose a major customer.

Amazon additionally announced the “Graviton” chip, a processor for its cloud unit. Graviton is powered by technology from ARM Holdings. The use of Graviton in its data centers represents a major threat to Intel’s dominance in this market.

“AWS goes blockchain: The cloud giant announces two distributed ledger services”

AWS is launching two blockchain ledger related services – one centralized and one decentralized. Amazon Quantum Ledger Database (QLDB) is a fully-managed ledger database with a central trusted authority. According to AWS, QLDB is immutable, cryptographically verifiable, transparent, fast and will allow for the execution of double the amount of transactions as standard blockchains.  The second service is Amazon Managed Blockchain, which enables users to create and manage their own scalable blockchain networks using either Ethereum or HyperLedger.

“Brexit race to stockpile pushes some of UK’s aerospace suppliers to the brink”

Brexit has pushed Rolls-Royce and Airbus to stockpile parts before Brexit hits, not matter what deal is struck between now and March of 2019. This has pushed their small suppliers to the breaking point. With about 5 months to go before the UK leaves the EU, and no deal in sight companies are forced to prepare for the worst scenario.

The UK’s aerospace sector, the second largest in the world, supports 120K jobs, and relies heavily upon smooth cross-border trade. This makes the entire industry vulnerable that would cause more checks, delays or inspections that would create stickier supply chains, driving up costs and lead times resulting in an industry-wide inability to meet global demand.

As a result of the contentious Brexit negotiations, suppliers have started stockpiling parts, producing extra parts, or some have decided to wait and see if a deal can be struck during the latest round of negotiations.

“Optimized Prime: How AI and Anticipation Power Amazon’s 1-Hour Deliveries”

How does Amazon tackle it’s “first mile” “middle mile” and “last mile” to deliver orders in an hour leveraging AI? From the customer facing website all the way to the fulfillment centers and Amazon’s Flex service AI is woven into everything. This is to optimize product forecasting, inventory management, pick and retrieval, warehouse management, and delivery. However, AI cannot account for human behavior especially in the “last mile,” and its Flex service does not provide drivers with information regarding parking – often an issue in large cities when drivers are delivering to office buildings trying to make every minute count.

“ABN AMRO, Samsung SDS and the Port of Rotterdam Authority are launching a container logistics blockchain pilot”

The Port of Rotterdam, Samsung SDS (IT subsidiary of Korean giant chaebol Samsung), and ABN AMRO are collaborating on a logistics blockchain pilot to track a container from Korea to the Netherlands. On Monday, October 22, 2018 Samsung SDS revealed details of a new partnership with ABN AMRO for a joint pilot for tracking a container from a Korean factory to the Port of Rotterdam. The pilot will involve linking ABN AMRO’s Corda platform, developed by New York based R3, and Samsung SDS’s Nexledger, Samsung’s enterprise blockchain.

Traditionally, an international trade finance transaction involving shipments sees payments, administration and the physical transportation of containers occur in separate flows with a paper-intensive manual process. “We will be integrating all these flows in our pilot: from workflow management combined with track & trace to the digitisation of paper documentation such as waybills and the financing of handled freight or services” ABN AMRO’s commercial banking chief Daphne de Kluis explained.
